What is the HSK?
The HSK (汉语水平考试, Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì — “Chinese Proficiency Test”) is the official international exam that measures how well a non-native speaker knows Chinese. The levels are cumulative: the higher the number, the more words and grammar you need. An HSK certificate is required when applying to Chinese universities and jobs, and it helps beginners track their progress.
HSK 2.0
The version in use since 2009–2010 and still the most common one. It has six levels — HSK 1 to HSK 6 — and about 5,000 words. Most textbooks follow it, and it is the exam most people take today.
New HSK 3.0
The updated standard introduced in 2021. It is larger: nine levels (the top ones, 7–9, form a single band) and about 11,000 words. For the first time it also sets separate requirements for characters, grammar and syllables. It is being rolled out gradually, so for a while both standards are used side by side.
